In 1851, the first theatre was built in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, where ballets and operas from Russia and Europe were performed. A new theatre was completed in 1896, and in 1937, it was named the Zakharia Paliashvili Georgian National Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre. From 1941 to 1973, the legendary dancer and choreographer Vakhtang Chabukiani was the ballet artistic director. Since the 1970s, the company has grown under the leadership of Giorgi Aleksidze and Mikhail Lavrovsky. The company continued its activities even under unstable circumstances such as the collapse of the Soviet Union and Georgia's independence, and in 2004 Nina Ananiashvili, a world-famous prima ballerina, was appointed artistic director. The company now has a rich repertoire, including classical works, the works of Georgian-born Balanchine and Chabukiani, and contemporary pieces. It has tours to Europe, Japan, America, and more.
